Avice narrates the story of a new Ambassador (okay last definition: Ambassadors and pairs of people who can speak Language, and thus can communicate with Hosts), who upon speaking sends the Hosts into a tizzy. It deals with only the possible.Īnyway, I’m off track. This Langauge is made up of two voices speaking as one, and interestingly, it is a language in which lies cannot be told.

The Hosts, or Ariekei, are a largely unkonowable set of creatures, and are the backbone of the story. Which introduces us to Mieville’s strange and wonderful aliens. We’re given bits and pieces of her childhood, how she learnt to interact with the Hosts that the humans lived alongside with. Immersing, as far as I could tell, was how space ships travelled vast distances in this day and age, so I figured that meant she was a navigator of sorts. The story follows Avice Benner Cho, an Immerser, and the political instability that occurs during a trip home.

It’s a standalone, which takes place on a planet far far away, long into the future. It’s the fourth of Mieville’s books I’ve read, and he didn’t disappoint with the strange and unsettling that’s so recognisable in his works. Embassytown by China Mieville is one of the most interesting books I’ve read this year.
